Profitability problems do not arise from conditions outside the company such as regulation, de-regulation, predatory pricing, constraints driven by government, a recession, tight money, declining sales or any combination of the above. However, a change in these outside conditions creates imbalance inside the company. These conditions act as the triggering mechanism that suddenly makes things that formerly worked no longer work.

They can exacerbate your internal problems to the point you can no longer live with them. At that point, you either have to fall by the wayside or correct the internal problems, which by the way is not management itself, but the measurement systems and methods management uses.

Robert Sullivan, President
Transportation Profitability Group

Welcome to Transportation Profitability Group

Everything follows cash; profitability, a strong balance sheet, everything. Cash even determines the level of human, physical and financial resources within the company. Every revenue dollar generated has cost associated with it while hopefully leaving a few pennies for profitability…if pricing was correct and operations were efficient. Conversely, every dollar saved puts a dollar on the bottom line since no cost is involved. The TPG EMS costing system generates cash and profitability through a two pronged approach; revenue generation and productivity improvement in operations.

The TPG EMS costing model is unique in that it costs shipments and customers based on the company’s operating footprint and operating characteristics at 100% efficiency without all the company’s operating inefficiencies (a carrier’s operating inefficiencies belong to the carrier, not passed on to the customer as a markup of cost). No other system in the industry has that capability. Some of the most profitable regional carriers in the industry use this methodology.

This approach provides more market share for the carrier. Then as that market share increases, it is absorbed with existing capacity in pickup and delivery, dock and linehaul as measured by the EMS operations productivity management module.

I can honestly say that with the recession that really started to affect us in October of 2008, NTC may not have survived had we not eliminated inefficiencies that the EMS quickly exposed. Once we did that, we could then arrive at contribution ratios for the freight we were hauling and bidding on to insure profitability”.
